A legal DNA relationship test is intended for court use and is accepted as legal evidence of a biological relationship. In order for a DNA test to be legally admissible, the sample collection must be performed and witnessed by an unbiased third party who has no interest in the outcome of the test.
How are samples collected for legal DNA testing?
Our laboratory offers two sample collection and witnessing options for legal DNA relationship testing:
Self-Arranged Collection
If you prefer to arrange your own sample collection and witnessing services, our home legal option offers the flexibility of arranging your own independent professional, such as a physician, nurse, or notary, for sample collection and witnessing services. Our laboratory will ship a legal DNA sample collection kit to an address that you provide, and you are responsible for selecting your own specimen collector. This individual must act impartially and cannot be related to you or have any personal or financial interest in the test's outcome.
Laboratory-Arranged Collection
With this option, our laboratory will arrange for sample collection and witnessing services at one of our hundreds of collection facilities across North America. If the individuals participating in the DNA test live in different cities, separate sample collection appointments can be scheduled at collection facilities closest to each individual (additional fees may apply).
